Why shouldn’t Donald Trump get Peace Prize?

Ever since there was a mention of President Donald Trump getting a Nobel Peace Prize, the meme creators have been in overdrive. What is more disheartening to see is that people have started hurling personal abuses at each other on this. Donald Trump has personally taken it for granted that he will get it soon. I personally find this a bit funny and also find it hypocritical of people to question why President Trump shouldn’t get it.

Here is why I feel Donald Trump getting a Nobel Peace Prize is not a big deal.

  1. Nobel Peace Prize has nothing to do with the beliefs, actions and impact of the winner on the Global Peace. It is a very subjective process. It should not be an epitome of achievement, especially in the field of peacekeeping. The process can be found on their website. (https://www.nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/)
  2. As I look at the history of people who have won Nobel Peace Prize, few names stand out for their notoriety.
    • Barack Obama – for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.
    • Aung San Suu Kyi – for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights
    • Mikhail Gorbachev – for his leading role in the peace process which today characterizes important parts of the international community
    • Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, and Yitzhak Rabin – for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East
    • Mother Teresa – Founder of Missionaries of Charity
    • Henry Kissinger – For the 1973 Paris agreement intended to bring about a cease-fire in the Vietnam war and a withdrawal of the American forces
  3. When Barack Obama won the peace prize, the US troops were intervening in 6 sovereign nations. I didn’t see many liberals/liberal media cry out against his award. Any meme on Obama winning the peace prize would have been considered racist.

In conclusion, my support for the Nobel Peace Prize for Donald Trump doesn’t come from the position of him achieving something but from a position of irreverence towards the award itself. It is a meaningless award given to boost the ego of different people or in some instances boost the image of the award itself. While Trump doesn’t need either an ego boost and the award will not get an image boost by honouring him, it certainly will help the world by designating the right place for this frivolous award.

I have a dream….

As a child, I read about Dr.Martin Luther King Jr and his famous speech, “I have a dream…” in my history books. YouTube gave me the opportunity to watch it and experience his gravitas. The speech was not just moving but also very skillfully written. I must have since watched it over 100 times. The beauty of his dreams was that none of his dreams actually involved Dr. King. It wasn’t like I have a dream to change the situation or I have a dream to live in a certain society. The dream was truly for the future of the society and didn’t even require him as a catalyst or a promoter. It was hard for me to ignore that fact. It struck a chord with me and continues to do so till this very date. For long, I wondered about writing my version of the same in the twenty first century. Here is my humble attempt at the same.

For long, I wondered about my version of the same. Here is my humble attempt at the same.

In the 150,000 years of human history, the last 150 years have been extremely significant. In this evolutionary flash, we have understood our universe a lot better through General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. We have written more books than the entire human history. In the field of Medicine, we discovered penicillin, eradicated small pox, have almost eradicated polio and now are able to perform organ replacement. We have understood the evolution of species by the understanding of the DNA and its switching. From the discovery of radio in the last decade of the 19th century, we have moved to connecting the entire world through internet by the last decade of the 20th century. We have sent humans to space, satellites to as far as Saturn and a spaceship outside of the solar system. We have developed techniques to improve agriculture productivity. We have spread arts and culture through the development of science. All this in the span of less than .1% of our entire history. The apes from savannas have evolved to some great extent.

With all these inventions, we still are on the brink of a Nuclear War. The narcissistic leaders of the world, who have no idea of what physical and chemical processes which lead to this, have been given the right to trigger a war which could end the human race. The parties of god are ruling more than 50% of the countries, still discriminating against, women, LGBTQ, people of colour and minorities in their respective countries. The top 80 rich people hold more wealth than the bottom 70% of the world put together. Children are dying of malnutrition and before I finish this sentence, one child has died somewhere because of lack of access to clean water. The only people who seem to go there are trying to capitalise on their misery to spread their religion. Slavery has taken a new form through bonded labours like the foreign workers in the middle east, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong. There are child labourers still working on mines. Women are being treated as second-class citizens in many countries and domestic violence is still a big issue. The capitalists are still focused on individual wealth rather than collective growth of humans. Accessibility and affordability of healthcare is an issue globally except for a few developed welfare states. Terrorism is ruling the minds of people with fear. Human-induced climate change is a massive catastrophe waiting to happen and we have climate change deniers in key positions across the globe. The situation is nowhere close to where the world should be with all our knowledge.

I have a dream,

… where every child whether born in Africa, Australia, the United States of America, Chile, Pakistan or anywhere else get an equal opportunity to learn and be the best they can.

… where women all over the world have the equal right to do everything their male counterpart do

… where religious faith has no place in public life, so humility, learning, humanity, rationale, social welfare drive policies

… where discrimination on the basis of race, culture, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, class, vocation is not considered a right and protection of the discriminated is not a personal liberty issue

… where freedom of speech cannot be arrested by force or fear of intimidation

… where individual’s sexual orientation or preference is respected and treated equally

… where the majority opinion is not used to silence the minorities

… where the pursuit of science and arts is welcome to the betterment of the entire society

… where no individual has to ever stay hungry

… where power is in the collective hands of people and not in the hands of the wealthy

… where information flow is not arrested and intellectual property belongs to the collective humanity

… where no animal is hunted for fun and no animal is raised to be hunted

… where failure is celebrated and learnings from the failure a welcome

… where old age gets security and every individual has the right to a healthy life

… where every nation has the right to self-govern with a respect for pluralism and mutual respect

… where truth cannot be suppressed by the threat of offence

… where every woman has right to control her reproduction

… where nations unite to support each other

… where any individual who works for 8 hours earns enough to sustain themselves and their family

… where wealth is not transferred to generations by the virtue of birth and it isn’t necessary to be wealthy to achieve success in life

This dream cannot be achieved by individual will but by the collective will of people to create a system which works for everyone. A system which doesn’t need great leaders. A system which will learn and continue to improve itself. I have a dream that one day the world will be a place where we fight the real battles facing us through science and enjoy our life here through arts.

Thank you.

The beautiful rocks in Putty beach

A few weeks back I went to a place called Putty beach in Bouddi National Park with my family and very close friends. The beautifully coloured sandstone rocks fascinated me and I started doing some research on it. I had a whole bunch of questions.

What are these?
What is the origin?
When were they formed?
What gives it the colour?

These rocks are part of the Sydney Sandstone Basin, commonly referred to as the Hawkesbury Sandstone. Sydney sandstone was deposited in the Triassic Period in a fluvial delta. So, these rock formations date back to 200 – 250 million years, a time before our commonly known dinosaurs like T-Rex even existed. The mere thought of how the world would have been during that time is quite fascinating to think about. A water body which existed over 500 million years ago, created these rocks which subsequently went through so much transformation to result in what we saw there, a beautiful red-brown feast.

These rocks are forms of grains of sand which are quite amazing to look. The stone is porous and is supposed to act as a filter. It is made of very pure silica grains and a tiny amount of iron all held together by clay. The concentric bands of red and brown is a result of oxidation of the iron caused by rainfall. It cuts all the way through the rocks. So, it is not the colour of the deposit or the age which causes the bands, which was what I originally thought. I cannot fail to appreciate the impact of natural forces and time involved to create the beautiful sight.

The Sydney basin comprises of the igneous rocks from the Permian period(250 – 300 million years ago) and the different types of sedimentary rocks from the Triassic period (200 – 250 million years ago).

Here is an article which shares some context of what happened during the Triassic Period in general.

In the course of understanding these, I found a lot of interesting literature available in public domain. I have given the links below for anyone interested.

The media’s obsession with war – a way to show patriotism

I try my best to avoid mocking Donald Trump but there was a recent interview on Fox News which I was unable to ignore.  I want to use that interview to showcase the sick attitude in the media.

Most critics on this interview focused on the wrong part, which is Trump’s obsession on explaining the Chocolate cake. I found a particular point quite curious. In the 8th second of the video, Mario Bartiromo the fox news interviewer asks a question “was that planned? .. because right there you are saying a reminder who the superpower in the world is….”. She says that with what I see as a condescending smirk, an expression I am increasingly seeing amongst republicans addressing the media. If you replace Donald Trump with Barrack Obama, that question could have definitely come from Jake Tapper  or Anderson Cooper of CNN. This attitude definitely exemplifies what is wrong with the media.

Every media outlet has been supportive of Trump’s strikes in Syria. They see subservience to the moral policing of the NATO forces headed by the US, the military strikes in the middle east and the regime changes across the globe as a way to prove their patriotism and also satisfy their owners who have heavily invested in arms dealers and manufacturers.

Though the reasons to support the military might could be different, the media attitude towards this testosterone-infused governance is quite pervasive across the globe. Countries like China, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Australia, the UK, Philippines have become glowing examples of military reverence. A mere act of questioning the military action is considered immoral and seditious.

Wikileaks – love them, fear them, hate them, can’t ignore them

Julian Assange is arguably the most famous and even the most impactful journalist of my generation. There have been some famous ones including people like Christopher Hitchens but none has been as popular globally as Mr.Assange. He has got politicians after his life, bureaucrats running for cover and progressive activists waiting for his next revelation. However, his behaviour recently has been clouded with mystery. There is a suspicious tie up between him and Trump campaign. It is fine for him to support anyone but he is too well respected amongst progressive circles to support a candidate like Trump. Then, Nigel Farage visited Assange and had a brain fade on why he did so. It was a pretty weird case. I want to break down my feel of why people feel differently about Julian Assange and why I feel his recent behaviours have been suspicious.

Timing of the DNC email leaks

This is arguably the first item which shook the US Primaries. While most of the progressive media were supporting Bernie Sanders, there was massive corruption in the primaries to ensure Hillary Clinton wins. It was kind of an open secret to people who were following it closely. However, there was no concrete weapon to fight. Wikileaks, on the other hand, was silently collecting these weapons. They could have released them any day. That could have ensured that the progressives rally to ensure Hillary did not get selected.

Wikileaks decided to release the documents on the day of the convention. It exposed the inherent bias of DNC and its chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. I was happy that they released it but I wanted it to be released sooner. When asked Julian’s response wasn’t convincing. There seems to be a clear plan here against Bernie Sanders and ensuring that he doesn’t get elected. This is not free, fair and unbiased media. This feels like fair but controlled media.

Subsequent interviews on the US election

After the primaries and right through the General Election process, there was a youtube channel which hosted all the Julian Assange interviews. He continuously kept mentioning points on the establishments plotting against Trump. I could get hold of a couple for now. I agree to all the accusations on Hillary Clinton and the CIA. The surprising thread to the story was him denying knowing anything about Donald Trump. It feels like there is a deeper connection here. Did Assange decide Trump was the lesser of the two evils? If it is, does that account for unbiased journalism?

Meeting with Nigel Farage

There is something really crazy about the secret meeting between Julian Assange and Nigel Farage. I can’t think of anything common between the two. Nigel is a poster child of horrible ideas. Julian wants to carry the mantle of the free press and progressive ideas. What is the connection? What makes it worse is Nigel cannot remember the conversation right outside Ecuador’s embassy where he met Julian.

For people who don’t know Nigel Farage, please go through his Wikipedia link here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Farage

Trump talks about Obama wiretapping a day before Wikileaks releases the documents

This is another surprising coincidence. Donald Trump sends tweets about Obama wiretapping him exactly a days before Wikileaks released documents on wiretapping. There was no evidence of Obama wiretapping Trump in that and I definitely want WikiLeaks to release those documents. However, there is a strange connection in terms of timing. I am not sure how it is playing out.

In conclusion, I was and still am in favour of the free press movement of Julian Assange. They have instilled fear in the hearts of the political establishments by exposing corruption. However, it is becoming increasingly unclear to me if it is still a free press. There are a lot of questions in my head on what is brooding under the surface.

TN is making Pepsi and Coke cry

Few give me more satisfaction than seeing deeply corrupt organisations like Pepsi and Coke suffer. The traders from Tamil Nadu decided to ban sales of soft drinks from Pepsi and Coke. The reason given is that these companies kill local competition and also take water from agriculture. I want to pause my joy and critically analyse the players involved.

The easiest party to shed light is the government of TamilNadu. TamilNadu is a state under serious water crisis. In response to a PIL, the government has filed an affidavit in support of these two companies. Their rationale is they are only diverting excess water to the bottling plant. It is difficult to find a case of more blatant corruption, where authorities have sold themselves to the lobbyists.

The second party is also quite easy, the soft drink manufacturers and their association. Nothing bad can be said about them which is untrue. Firstly, they don’t care about either the environment or their consumers. Secondly, the fact that they are using the age old excuse of providing employment to people suggests that they have run out of ideas. Drug cartels and human traffickers employ people. That cannot be used as a justification. Thirdly, nothing that people are saying is actually false. They have done all that.

The last and the most important party is the traders’ association. How come after all these years they have realised the impact of these multinational soft drinks manufacturers. They were supportive of these companies when they were distributing fridges. They didn’t support the local producers when Pepsi and Coke bought stock from Indian companies and broke them. They did that just to make people forget these products. Let’s just accept the premise that they have finally come to understand these companies. Even then they aren’t replacing it with something good. They are going to replace it with other carbonated sugary drinks. This just reeks of disguise. It just looks like a deal gone wrong or some other financial issue.

Overall, it is just fun to watch three despicable parties contest it. I just hope this continues for long. It can only be good when multinational companies are held to ransom.

Giving Shobhaa De a taste of her own medicine

Shobhaa De, an Indian columnist and author recently stirred up a storm by mocking an obese cop and posting his picture on Twitter. The social media trollers along with the cops reacted to that in a very strong way. Then the cop who was actually mocked came out and shared his side of the story. Here is my take on the entire episode.

  1. Body shaming someone is not great irrespective of their gender. I am sure the entire reaction of Shobhaa De would have been different had someone posted picture of her. As an advocate of feminism and equal rights, she has to behave in way more dignified manner.
  2. It is not freedom of expression when you take picture of someone else and post it on social media without their knowledge. You don’t even know this person. It is the kind of mindless behaviour that is causing psychological trauma to millions of people all over the world.
  3. Her second tweet saying ‘No offence intended’ is actually worse than the first. It is a blatant lie. She did mean to offend. She should at least stand up to what she did. It was neither an apology nor ownership. It is not even humour.
  4. People are obese for various reasons. I am sure she didn’t think of posting a picture of one of Mukesh Ambani’s sons when he was obese. Not everyone can afford a Bollywood style dietician.
  5. Finally, she took credit for her despicable act resulting in some decent result. Formation of Isreal doesn’t mean you can justify Holocaust. She then continued with the pun stating that the police need to take fitness seriously.  I am sure that is not a great insight. It doesn’t make her look smart either. It is like someone saying, people should eat healthy food and expect everyone to admire at the insight.

Finally, she is expecting media to leave people like Gurmehar Kaur alone. I agree with that but is interesting coming from her mouth. I am sure she will hate it when people troll her. If you break fundamental disciplines then expect people to give you a taste of your own medicine. You are a troller and you will get trolled. I don’t think you deserve sympathies. Feminism and free speech need better advocates than people like you.

Another gun crime – Killing in Kansas

Many of you would have come across this story of  Srinivas Kuchibhotla, an Indian engineer who was shot dead in Kansas, US. For people who haven’t here are some of the links to go through.

LA Times
CNN – Widow of the victim speaking
Quartz
Reuters

Before I start, let me tell you that I have nothing but utmost sympathies for the family of the victim and tremendous respect for people who tried to prevent this incident. However, my view on the nature of the issue is slight different.

Adam Purinton, the perpetrator is a 51 year old Navy veteran. I have deliberately ignored his race as I deem it unimportant. I have probably lost half of you now, but continue on if you want to understand the systemic issue underneath. Here are my 4 major reasons for this crime according to me.

  1. He is a Navy veteran, who has been indoctrinated to think in a way
  2. Think of his economic situation
  3. Support for ex-service people
  4. The seriously dumb gun laws

Long back I worked with an army veteran from India. In a casual chat, I could realise his deep rooted hatred for people from Pakistan. He wasn’t able to think beyond his biases to feel the people from the other side of the border have equal needs and wants as him. That brought me to another realisation, it is not possible for him to wage a war with those people if he starts empathising with their situation. I can’t essentially shoot a person down if I start feeling for his family. To take someone’s life for an ideology needs one to be indoctrinated deeply in its favour. There cannot be a moral predicament in a situation of need. Imagine such a person with strong faith in certain ideologies getting hold of weapons. The situation is bound to get out of control soon. The accused in this instance, Adam is one such. He has been trained to attack people of a certain skin tone or religion or both. He was fighting wars against them. All of a sudden, he starts seeing them in his midst and he has weapons. How does that work?

It is easy to attribute every violent behaviour by white people as racist. Racism in most instances is the facade or in some instances is the trigger. I do not believe that Adam has insulted every non-white he has met till date. He is probably facing the same economic turmoil as most dwindling US middle class. The bottom 60% of the society has been ignored for decades and the pent-up grievances are showing up as anger.  Adam has probably seen the US economy move from something that worked for him to something that will never work for him. He finds people whom he has classified as outsiders (as discussed above) living a decent life. How does he act?

The United States of America has been fighting wars for decades now. I can’t remember a time when they were not in war, with a country. What happens to all these war veterans when they go back. It is economically impossible to wage a war continuously and provide the necessary support for the veterans. People who have fought a war, need lot of mental and economic support. If they are not provided, then they are left to act on their instincts, which is most instances is actually quite depressing. Again in this instance, we have a veteran, with a gun, not in the best spirits looking at a person whom he has been taught to kill.  What does he think?

Why is the US congress unable to look at the need for gun control? What is the fascination in holding a gun? Kids shooting in schools, depressed men shooting women, terrorists shooting innocents, random shootings and list goes on. It is time for people to mature and look at the calendar to realise that we are in 2017 and not 1700s. There is no need for common people to have a weapon. If someone needs it, then they can loan it for a purpose e.g. I want to scare animals from my farm etc.

Connecting the dots, you have got a ex-Navy person, who has been indoctrinated to kill brown people or a certain religion, in deep economic crisis, looking at people looking similar to people he killed doing well, has no support from the government and has access to guns. It is the gross failure on the part of the US government which has engaged in series of wars and hasn’t done enough for the veterans or have good gun control laws. Yes, the perpetrator should be brought to justice but so should the system which has failed Srinivas and countless other innocents.

Again, it is sad that we have lost a life and it is worse for that family. As rational people, we need to think through the problem. I do agree that apart from my reasons, there have been lot of other instigators and reasons for this incident. However, unless these systemic risks are addressed, people will be addressing the symptom and not the issue.

Tribute before I start

I have for long wanted to write about my views on the Geo-political environment, faiths ,corruption and life. However, before I start writing my views on these, there are couple of people I would like to pay tribute. One is my father, the man who exposed me to critical thinking, rationale, socialism, politics and criticism. I have always admired his knowledge and ability to disambiguate a problem, something that I have to expect considering his mathematical knowledge. The second one is Christopher Hitchens,a man I consider my mentor in many ways. I disagree a lot with both these people, however I have learnt from them that there is no harm in disagreement. Disagreements, debates, introspection and free speech are some of the main drivers for civilisation.

I am product manager by profession and a cynic through out. I have never trusted what people have asked me to trust. There is nothing more disheartening to me than acknowledging any supremacy without a fight. This blog is where I am going to vent my thoughts, frustrations and anger.

I am an anti-theist, philosophically a communist and politically a social-democratic. I am a voracious supporter of free speech and liberty. I believe in seeking truth and my views will definitely be offensive. I will be glad to hear contradictory views and abuses.

Fascination to politeness

What is the fascination in being polite?

I always feel being right is more important than coming across as politeness. No offense, but most of the times when people as you to be polite, they expect you to just accept what they say without raising any opinion. If truth hurts, so be it. I would rather live my life, knowing I have been true to myself than knowing I have cheated myself for everyone else.

All of us are trained from our formative years through reinforcement of behavior. If you do this, I will give you chocolate. If you do that, I will hit you or I will not speak to you. Our thoughts get modified in way that our guardians want it to be. I fear most family problems arise, when these modified thoughts combine with our original thoughts to create a volatile amalgam.

Kids should be taught to express themselves and learn from their experiences. Guardians should help facilitate these processes and not direct it the way they want.

Am I going to be this to my daughter? I want to be, only she can tell if I am.
