Deconstructing our social fabric – The collusion between the theocrats and plutocrats

As I am sitting down to write this blog, my predominantly Hindu family is celebrating Varalakshmi Pooja, a festival to appease the Hindu god of wealth. This delineates association between two of the most diabolical thoughts, the desire for individual wealth & theocracy. I started to wonder about this rather despicable groups of plutocrats and theocrats.

As I explored the connection between the two groups, I could see a lot of pictures emerging and how they target each of the groups to maintain power. I also realised how concepts like libertarianism are nothing more than a bad joke. These two groups not only have common traits but their philosophies are mutually beneficial.  This coalition of the morally depraved leechers has not only naturalised the disparities in the society but also justified the inequalities. so, I wanted to explore the below.

  • Why has the political right has been in bed with the social right for ages?
  • How do they operate?
  • What does the playing field look like?
  • What’s their approach?
  • How to navigate through this?

It is definitely about power

As most philosophers have already said, this strictly is a game of power. This is the most obvious point. The need to have power is a fairly innate nature of humans. In the current social structure, power can be got by wealth and wealth can be retained by developing morals around the wealthy. The morals can be defined by religion through seduction and fear. Now, the only open piece of this is who should be wealthy? If the system is designed to control who can be wealthy and not let wealth distribute, then the job is done.

Over the human history, one group has used wielded of this power over others. However, not all groups have been equally ravenous. This voracity for power is a commonality between plutocrats and theocrats. They always hide behind social justice and righteousness. Both these philosophies need the power to keep people in check so that the effects of their practices can be negated.

Let’s start with the plutocrats. These people are advocates of the free-market capitalism. The popular misconception is that free-market capitalists don’t want any rules and this will drive meritocracy. This red herring is intended to distract people from understanding the actual point which is they want to power so that they can form the rules. Political Economics is a game and like any other, it needs rules. There is no game without rules and order. Hit the capitalists hard, they will be the first one to cry for rules in any society. The capitalist rulers have done this well by transferring the key portfolios to the parties of god. The key portfolios which the faith parties demand are always, education and health. They never ask for water, natural resources, mining as that requires a certain degree of expertise which isn’t in the scriptures.

Religion, on the other hand, helps capitalism by bringing in servility and credulity into the system. Religion also needs power so that the society continues to trust their myths and absurdities. Once religion has the power they create the rules through god’s will. The powerful capitalists support religious faith with their wealth. There is a strong case of mutual benefit group. You won’t find many theocrats using Mark’s gospel “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God”. Apart from the original figures of every religious cult, the subsequent ones have required money to propagate. They have supported the patronage of the wealthy as part of their mutual support group. The two key areas which the theocrats want to corrupt our education and healthcare. The former is the source of development and critical thinking and the latter develops an understanding of diseases. If they lose these two, they cannot seduce people into their system or scare them to join. This is a partnership of true evil.

The field for the power game – our social fabric

I want to deconstruct my opinions to understand the fabric better. So, I have decided to break the social structures in pyramids, with each pyramid having levels. There are two such pyramids, one economic pyramid or class pyramid and the second one is the religious pyramid. The reason these pyramids are important is that they highlight the alignment of the people and thereby their motivations. Just to be clear, these are my observations from my research and I did not go around getting statistics. There will definitely be exceptions to this. The class pyramid has the upper class or the wealthy, the middle class or the white collar earners with a steady income and the lower income earners, who do not have a steady income stream or have low-income stream below sustainable levels. The religious pyramid has the fundamentalists on top. These are people who are holding extremely strong religious views, evangelising those views or driving policies through those views. Some of them might be extremists but most of them aren’t. Then there are moderates, who believe in all the religious principles,  have faith that it is for the collective good and peace. It gives them comfort to lead their lives. The last group are the sceptics.

Pyramids1

However, if we coalesce these to create a mix of our society, this is what I see.

where they belong1

Now, I will break each of these groups down and talk about which parts of the pyramids constitute this group.

Right wing Extremists

Extremism is a fringe force in most societies. The right wing extremists are generally the literal interpreters of the religious texts, who have an inclination to use force to spread the view of their favourite fiction. These people include the KKK, the Boko Haram, Al -Qaeda, Shiv Sena, Lakshar-e-Taiba etc.

Religious Pyramid: Fundamentalists
Class Pyramid: Any of the three

Left wing Extremists

Just like their right-wing counterparts, the left wing extremists take a hardline stance to implement a certain Marxist economic theory but use do it by the use of force and in general quite indiscriminately. Where they differ extremely from the right-wing group is they start as a revolution to change the state of the oppressed. They always take the name of a Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Karl Marx or Mao Zedong to drive their ideology. However, they quickly drift into a unit which can’t get violence out of their system. The Maoists in India, the Communist forces in other parts of the world are an example of this group.

Religious Pyramid: Skeptics
Class Pyramid: Any of the three

Neo-Liberals / Libertarians

These are the people who will fight against racism, fight for individual liberty, fight for marriage equality, legalisation of drugs and at the same time fight for free market enterprises, privatisation and elimination of the state from public affairs. These are the followers of Adam Smith and David Ricardo. They believe social welfare schemes prevents collective human development and somehow individuals through free markets will magically work. The high profile examples for this are the Jeff Bezos and Peter Thiel on the business side or Rand Paul on the political side.

Religious Pyramid: Predominantly Skeptics, some moderates
Class Pyramid: Predominantly upper middle class, some upper class

Leftist Corporate sellouts

These are people who claim to the on the left but have been bought over by the special interest groups and lobbies. They are for women’s rights, minority rights, human rights but are on the side of corporate powerhouses. They want to have government intervention through private partnerships in the fields of Health Care, Education. We can see them fight against climate change but not against wall street intervention. These are mostly educated upper middle class who are working at big corporations. The high profile examples of this group include Barrack Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. These are also people who feel staying left is incorrect and generally, prefer to call themselves commonsensical.

Religious Pyramid: Moderates
Class Pyramid: Predominantly middle class

Social, progressive Democrats

These are people who believe in the democratic system, a welfare state, economic redistribution and capitalism with controls. They are not against Capitalism but do not want it to have a free run. They want the government to run for the benefit of everyone. They are keen on key government initiatives like health care, education and transportation to be available to everyone. They are keen on maintaining individual liberties and are big proponents of human rights and equality. They are vocal against the growing income and wealth inequality and the rampaging private corporations. People like Bernie Sanders, Jeremy Corbyn, Elizabeth Warren, famous linguist Noam Chomsky, economists like Thomas Piketty and Mark Blyth are examples of this group. Most of these people are well educated social activists.

Religious Pyramid: Predominantly Skeptics, some moderates
Class Pyramid: Predominantly middle class, some upper class and lower class

The ugly coalition (Free market capitalists + Theocrats)

This group is Conservative party of every country in the world. They use fear and seduction to gain power and control everyone. They form a big percentage of the tip of both the pyramids. The attributes you see with these people are

  • Trickle down economics – Tax breaks for the rich
  • Get Government out of Health Care & Education
  • Restrict civil rights to the minorities under the pretext of individual liberties and freedom of religion

Religious Pyramid: Predominantly Fundamentalists
Class Pyramid: Predominantly middle class, some upper class and lower class

Average Working Class

This is the group of the commons. People who work to earn income and sustain a living. These are people who do not possess any special power like extraordinary intelligence, wealth, access to privileged information. They are affected deeply by the policy changes, outsourcing, increase in bills. This is the average consumer who is scared of automation taking away their jobs.

Religious Pyramid: Predominantly Moderates, some fundamentals, some sceptics
Class Pyramid: Lower class and Middle class

Religious Reformers

These people want to take the principle of God, clean up the religion and use it to reform the society. They are smart enough the understand the issues but still have to believe the existence of a supernatural. They believe in a God but they do not despise people of other faiths or atheists. I put people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Dr. Cornel West, Raif Badawi etc in this list.

Religious Pyramid: Moderates
Class Pyramid: Lower class and Middle class

Theocratic Supremacists

This is a fringe group of people who are economically quite social but are extremely theocratic. The Hamas, people like Steve Bannon etc fall into this category. They want to create a welfare state only for their religion and state. As much as this group is a fringe they are one of the deadliest threat to civilisation, as they will affect pluralism, cultural evolution and individual liberties.

Religious Pyramid: Fundamentalists
Class Pyramid: Upper Class

Understanding the players in the game

The game is all about who rules the average working class group. The average working class will never be economically right if they fully understand what it means. This is how the society looks like for the Ugly Coalition.

Right wing Extremists: These people can be used to spread the fear of god, continue to instil credulity and servility in the system. However, they have to be kept at arm’s length as they might divide the society.
Neo-Liberals/Libertarians: These people fall for the greed of money. These are ivy league educated people, who can be seduced by neo-spiritual movements.
Leftist Corporate Sellouts: These people are the fake opponents who are needed to ensure that the working class get a fake sense of choice. They will never rock the boat.
Socialists, Progressive democrats: These people have grown out of grass root development programs. This population has to be minimised and in the long run, such programs which create them should be eliminated.
Left wing extremists: This is a self-destructive group. These people can be controlled by the use of military and by instilling fear of communism all across the society.
Religious Reformers: This is a group to worry about. Dr. King wasn’t assassinated when he was fighting for the rights of the blacks, but he was killed when wanted to fight against the class system in the US. This group are generally the target of violence from the right wing extremists.
Theocratic Supremacists: This group is again a partner group which gets used wisely. They are used by the rich to get the working class continue to be interested in the party of the god and also keep them divided by race, religion, nationality etc.

In the eyes of the scum1

So, as marked above, the target group for the coalition is the group of the working class, corporate sellouts and neo-liberals. As long as they control this group through money and religion, they will continue to remain in power. With time they can move the axis more and more to the right.

What’s the strategy?

This is truly a game where the intent is to remove the rules to gain power. The democratic is looked at as hindrance as they add rules to the game. Now that we understand the arena, the game and the target persona, let’s move forward to look at the steps taken by this coalition to stay in power.  In order to do that we need to understand, what will make the working class move towards the left or be more informed. There are three key areas which will move the working class more towards the left. They are

  • Education
  • Empowerment of women
  • Economic Certainty
    • Steady flow of sustainable income
    • Ability to save and in the process accumulate wealth
    • No fear of untoward expenses like healthcare
    • Will create unity, pluralism and culture of sharing growth

So, here is the strategy as I see it being employed.

Keep people ignorant

Education provides knowledge and knowledge drive rationale. Religion needs believers and capitalism need a steady supply of human labour at the bottom of the pyramid who are ready to do anything for little to nil cost. The plutocrats who want to run the society through markets as a ‘free enterprise’ want the people to believe it is for their good. Religion has to eliminate education to suppress critical thinking. Who in their full sanity will believe any of the below?

  1. Earth is 5000 years old
  2. We are descendants of Adam and Eve, who were created in the image of God
  3. There was a monkey god with his army ruling a kingdom with a human god ruling another one next to him
  4. A Prophet flew to heaven on a winged horse
  5. There a god of knowledge who needs you not to think for yourself and is married to the god of creation

Adolf Hitler, a dictator of the worst order had a division of power agreement with the Church. He gave the Catholic Church complete control over education in Germany and in return had the Christian Democrats will stay out of politics to give him control over the state.

This is why they always attack education. Anytime a conservative government gets to power, you will see two policies.

  1. Reduction in investment in private school
  2. Development of faith-based schools under the pretext of balanced education

Both these corrupt generations of people by destroying critical thinking and scientific questioning.

Naturalise the status quo through entitlements

Recently Donald Trump Jr took a dig a socialism on Twitter. This tweet epitomizes the rather disturbing notion of socialism and the entitlement people feel about their wealth. Does it take special skill to be born son of a rich spoilt dad? Most people on the right would defend this through what I called entitlement theories.

Screen Shot 2017-11-10 at 1.47.30 pm

Here are the popular right wing entitlement theories.

  • People are rich because God wanted them to be rich.
  • Being poor is God’s punishment for your sins.
  • Being poor is a test by God to see if you are still faithful.
  • I am rich because I worked hard.
  • I have the right to have my wealth to myself and give it to my children.
  • You are poor because you are lazy.
  • No one asked you not to be wealthy.
  • Women are meant to do this as per the scripture.
  • God doesn’t like homosexuals.

Someone, not being wealthy is either made a punishment of God or a result of laziness. The sense of entitlement to their capabilities, inheritance, and achievements is a very common trait in humans, without understanding the context of that entitlement. The naturalisation of the liberal economics or commonly referred to as the fiscal conservative is the biggest success of the neoliberal movement. It justifies the entitlement towards individual success and a reverence of wealth in this form. There is no acknowledgement of the genetic advantages gained through centuries of well-being, education and accessibility to opportunities created by inherited wealth. The argument for entitlement of inheritance and the free market are not only mutually exclusive but also grossly contradictory. However, for the proponents and admirers of these theories, it is for some reason not visible.

Keep people divided

“Divide and rule” is a very very old method used by ruling class over the population. The scriptures give a way to discriminate against women and the homosexuals. Most scriptures also legalise slavery. The Hindu scriptures promote division through caste system. In the modern era, we have added race, ethnicity and nationality have been added to the mix. So the scriptures have done with work for creating the divide. However, in order to rule, they need tension between the parties. Economic uncertainties will create those tensions. If there are economic uncertainties which are morally justified by their faith, then the tensions will grow naturally. As long as there are tensions within the working class, the ruling class will continue to flourish.

How do we arrest this flow?

The collusion between the theocrats and the plutocrats is not that much of a secret. However, it is a question of how do we overcome this rampaging force to prevent civilisation from regressing. Here are my thoughts.

Joint activism between progressives and religious reformers to do the following.

  1. Eliminate money from politics and ensure it stays that way for generations
  2. Invest in public education, and make education scientific, secular and free
  3. Join hands with the workers to create unions. Ensure there are minimum wages which will provide sustainable living
  4. Work on steps which will eliminate economic uncertainties
    1. Public and free healthcare including mental health
    2. Developmental programs for women’s education and health
    3. Make employers focus on re-skilling and training employees
  5. Promote free speech and let the bigotry come out, instead of arresting it
  6. Re-structure tax system
    1. Tax inheritance and wealth to fund public programs
    2. Income across the board should be taxed, with the high-income earners taxed more
    3. Eliminate loopholes for the rich and the corporates

Religion is a favourite toy for people and as the late Christopher Hitchens put it, it will continue to remain their favourite toy till they fear death. We cannot eliminate it but have to keep it out of the public sphere. In order to do that, it is important to invest in developing critical thinking, development of people over a sustained period to see the impact of this ghastly system erode. It is a multi-generation promissory note and something we owe to the future of our civilisation.

Fear of the left – at the root of the Democratic party politics

YouTube has been doing me favours by recommending videos which are fairly interesting to watch. Yesterday I stumbled upon one titled, “Obama on Fox News – Awesome Obama interview”. That got my attention immediately. For one, I haven’t watched it, secondly, I was curious about the tone of the Fox News reporters and finally, I wanted to know what was awesome about the interview. What I found was a rather despicable truth of the state of the American politics. It also emphasised my previous points on why Obama and his predecessors were the reason for the election of Donald Trump.

Here is the link for you to watch. I have deliberately moved the video to 4:41 minutes as that is where the interesting bit starts.

Check out the expression on Obama, when Bill O’Reilly a man who has since been accused of sexual harassment is questioning him on being a left-wing guy who wants to distribute wealth and create an entitlement state. Obama shrivels and almost wets his pants before vehemently opposing everything. He doesn’t want to be known as a left-wing guy, he doesn’t want to distribute wealth and above all, he doesn’t want to create an entitlement state. Borrowing the famous quote from Michelle Obama, when Bill O’Reilly went low, Barrack Obama went lower. It was a pathetic answer. This was a point where Obama literally sold his base short.

Remember, Obama ran for hope. He came to power when people were against the looting of Wall Streets. When the big bankers were bailed out as common people went homeless. Redistribution of wealth is not just procedural justice, it is required for the longterm sustenance of development and capitalism. What is wrong with that? What is wrong with being called the ‘left-wing guy’? Why is the opinion of Fox News host important, considering they will equate anyone with a social conscience to National Socialists? Obama didn’t want to be in anyone’s bad books. He wanted to please everyone and especially his corporate owners. You cannot please all quarters. If you please the right wing corporatist forces, then as a natural extension you will affect the vast majority of your working population in a negative way. If you sell hope and don’t deliver, you will leave the country in a much worse state than before. That failed hope has manifested itself into the one man, Donald Trump, who can affect the hope of every individual.

This inclination to be on the good books and not standing for progressive values is at the root of democratic politics. When you try to please all, you please none. When you can’t take a progressive stand, you invariably are worse than taking a conservative stand. Most of the US and for that matter, every country in the world need progressive systems and leadership. When the right-wing conservative politicians are proud of themselves, the left-wing should at least be able to say they are progressive. They should at least be able to take a pro-people progressive stand on all the issues.

I have a dream….

As a child, I read about Dr.Martin Luther King Jr and his famous speech, “I have a dream…” in my history books. YouTube gave me the opportunity to watch it and experience his gravitas. The speech was not just moving but also very skillfully written. I must have since watched it over 100 times. The beauty of his dreams was that none of his dreams actually involved Dr. King. It wasn’t like I have a dream to change the situation or I have a dream to live in a certain society. The dream was truly for the future of the society and didn’t even require him as a catalyst or a promoter. It was hard for me to ignore that fact. It struck a chord with me and continues to do so till this very date. For long, I wondered about writing my version of the same in the twenty first century. Here is my humble attempt at the same.

For long, I wondered about my version of the same. Here is my humble attempt at the same.

In the 150,000 years of human history, the last 150 years have been extremely significant. In this evolutionary flash, we have understood our universe a lot better through General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. We have written more books than the entire human history. In the field of Medicine, we discovered penicillin, eradicated small pox, have almost eradicated polio and now are able to perform organ replacement. We have understood the evolution of species by the understanding of the DNA and its switching. From the discovery of radio in the last decade of the 19th century, we have moved to connecting the entire world through internet by the last decade of the 20th century. We have sent humans to space, satellites to as far as Saturn and a spaceship outside of the solar system. We have developed techniques to improve agriculture productivity. We have spread arts and culture through the development of science. All this in the span of less than .1% of our entire history. The apes from savannas have evolved to some great extent.

With all these inventions, we still are on the brink of a Nuclear War. The narcissistic leaders of the world, who have no idea of what physical and chemical processes which lead to this, have been given the right to trigger a war which could end the human race. The parties of god are ruling more than 50% of the countries, still discriminating against, women, LGBTQ, people of colour and minorities in their respective countries. The top 80 rich people hold more wealth than the bottom 70% of the world put together. Children are dying of malnutrition and before I finish this sentence, one child has died somewhere because of lack of access to clean water. The only people who seem to go there are trying to capitalise on their misery to spread their religion. Slavery has taken a new form through bonded labours like the foreign workers in the middle east, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong. There are child labourers still working on mines. Women are being treated as second-class citizens in many countries and domestic violence is still a big issue. The capitalists are still focused on individual wealth rather than collective growth of humans. Accessibility and affordability of healthcare is an issue globally except for a few developed welfare states. Terrorism is ruling the minds of people with fear. Human-induced climate change is a massive catastrophe waiting to happen and we have climate change deniers in key positions across the globe. The situation is nowhere close to where the world should be with all our knowledge.

I have a dream,

… where every child whether born in Africa, Australia, the United States of America, Chile, Pakistan or anywhere else get an equal opportunity to learn and be the best they can.

… where women all over the world have the equal right to do everything their male counterpart do

… where religious faith has no place in public life, so humility, learning, humanity, rationale, social welfare drive policies

… where discrimination on the basis of race, culture, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, class, vocation is not considered a right and protection of the discriminated is not a personal liberty issue

… where freedom of speech cannot be arrested by force or fear of intimidation

… where individual’s sexual orientation or preference is respected and treated equally

… where the majority opinion is not used to silence the minorities

… where the pursuit of science and arts is welcome to the betterment of the entire society

… where no individual has to ever stay hungry

… where power is in the collective hands of people and not in the hands of the wealthy

… where information flow is not arrested and intellectual property belongs to the collective humanity

… where no animal is hunted for fun and no animal is raised to be hunted

… where failure is celebrated and learnings from the failure a welcome

… where old age gets security and every individual has the right to a healthy life

… where every nation has the right to self-govern with a respect for pluralism and mutual respect

… where truth cannot be suppressed by the threat of offence

… where every woman has right to control her reproduction

… where nations unite to support each other

… where any individual who works for 8 hours earns enough to sustain themselves and their family

… where wealth is not transferred to generations by the virtue of birth and it isn’t necessary to be wealthy to achieve success in life

This dream cannot be achieved by individual will but by the collective will of people to create a system which works for everyone. A system which doesn’t need great leaders. A system which will learn and continue to improve itself. I have a dream that one day the world will be a place where we fight the real battles facing us through science and enjoy our life here through arts.

Thank you.

Is North Korea a real threat, unless we provoke?

North Korea is the new Russia for our media. The obsession to call the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea a ‘Rogue Nation’ is spreading wild. I have no sympathies for the totalitarian regime, however, the behaviour of the world leaders especially the NATO is rather pugnacious. This blog comes out of the answers to some simple questions.

  1. How many people has the North Korean regime killed outside its country in the last decade? Where does it stand with the United States?
  2. How many sovereign nations has the North Korean regime attacked in the last decade? Where does it stand with the United States?

The answers to both these questions is obvious and will put the entire hysteria around North Korea to perspective. So, where is all this coming from? Let’s break the hysteria down.

As a person who is more inclined to Marxism and Socialism, it bothers me when communism is associated with totalitarian regimes. I do not believe Communism as a form of governance with the power falling into the hands of a minority. Most communist regimes today are mostly oligarchy or totalitarian.  There is no accountability. As an atheist, it bothers me when they are referred as atheist or anti-faith regimes. In reality these are state run religions with the rulers worshipped as gods. North Korea fits into this criteria and I do not share any sympathies for that regime. The economy of the country is in shambles and unlike Cuba, the education system has broken down for the public. However, this doesn’t justify the war mongering against them.

The entire history this problem stems from the tensions between the USA and the then communist USSR. Japan had conquered whole of Korea in 1910 and rules them till the end of World War II. When Japan lost the war,  Korea got freed by the Allied Powers mainly the USSR and the USA. The former army was in the north and the latter in the south of the infamous 38th Parallel. As time went by, both the armies stuck to their grounds as the US feared the raise of communist influence in Korea. The communists under the founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung didn’t deal with the situation smartly either. It led to the split of Korea to the two countries we see now.

The next major incident in this is the Korean War. The war started with Kim Il-sung’s army invading the South. The United Nations gave its green signal to strike back and liberate South Korea. This war resulted in one of the most brutal attacks on the civilians in North Korea and left them in a very bad shape. The bombing of Pyongyang and destruction of its dams and fields is quite well documented. What most people don’t know if the Korean war never officially ended. The war which began in 1953 is still on.

This youtube playlist contains a collection of one of the best videos in this subject.

Once a country gets demolished to the extent North Korea got during the Korean War, it is extremely hard to recover without global support. North Korea got none such. People’s Republic of China was more keen on exploiting North Korea and the USSR was more interested in seeing who wins the cold war. Kim Il-sung didn’t need to motivate people to think the world was against them. The destruction did the job for him. People looked up to him for their survival. It is there in the DNA of the country.

Any half decent psychologist would point out that North Korea’s proliferation of arms at the expense of basic development, unsolicited threats to the US and its allies and self-adulation comes from fear of being attacked. They do not want another Korean war. Their nuclear capability is at its best a deterrent unless they are attacked.  They will not wage a war at a large scale. We are dealing with an unstable country with nuclear weapon, ruled by a lunatic.

Considering the circumstances in North Korea and the global climate crisis, another full fledged war would be a catastrophe of proportion that the world hasn’t seen.  The answer to the North Korea crisis is not threats but diplomacy. The United Nations along with rest of the countries should focus on development of North Korea, instead of sanctions and threats. It is not going to work in this situation. The people are captives of the government and do not understand that they are in an Orwellian society. Once they have education and the women in the society are empowered, the country will naturally develop. The regime will die a natural death. Most of the world leaders are not having that opinion. They are either just a thin skinned and mentally fragile as Kim Jong-un or want to shift the attention of people from their failing policies. This doesn’t augur well for the world. I wonder where the Doomsday clock is now.

“Don’t cut in on my action, Mr. Mooch”

The brief tenure of Anthony Scaramucci as the White House Communications director was brought to an abrupt end when the White House announced that the Mooch has resigned. It was interesting to see the theories in both the left and the right on my he was resigned or asked to resign. The Fox News discussed it and concluded Anthony will still have the President’s number and will play a role somehow in politics. That was particularly surprising considering he was a vociferous opponent of Trump’s view during the general elections and campaigned for Hillary Clinton. Further, Scaramucci has claimed to be for gun-control, for immigration and against the Muslim ban. So, how did this Wall Street sympathiser get picked in the first place?

If one looks at the Scaramucci’s public statements over the years, it is extremely easy to see the drastic similarities between him and Donald Trump. He changes his opinion quickly, disregards facts, has nil knowledge of government, keep cribbing about businesses not making enough money, flips positions on key issues, creates conspiracies, is loud mouthed, uses foul language to push his message and above all has no principles what so ever. He is not for Trump from Wall Street, he is another Trump in Wall Street.

People who have seen Donald Trump would know that he is attracted to conspiracy theorists and folks who disregard facts. The problem now is he found a person who takes screen time and limelight from him. Most of you who have seen the James Comey introduction after Donald Trump became the President. Trump said, “here is the guy who is almost as famous as me”. That is the attitude the President has on being famous. He wants to be in the news and the only person in the news. It is not acceptable for him to have someone just as bombastic in his White House. So, it is not a decision made on policy grounds or the White House regulation by the new Chief of Staff, it is a decision taken by Trump to quench his fear of sharing the limelight.

President Trump, the messiah for the Republican Party

Candidate Donald Trump had abused almost every fellow Republican candidate running against him. Even the then House majority leader Paul Ryan and the respected conservative leader Senator John McCain weren’t spared. The only senator to side with him was Jeff Sessions. However, ever since he got elected every party member has aided him, even if he crossed boundaries which are otherwise unacceptable to even the low moral standards set by the Republican Party. This could even come at the expense of their house and senate majority. Why do they do this? Here are my thoughts.

Republican Party has been one of the worst institutions in the history. They have been on the wrong side of pretty much every social cause. In spite of all that, they were never at their evil best. They worried about reelection, perception to initiate some of the very blatantly callous policies. All of a sudden, they got Trump. He is unabatedly brash, openly racist, xenophobic, pro-rich, anti science, blatantly homophobic, Islamaphobic, anti woman, anti establishment candidate they ever had. While they initially worried, they have now found the Messiah they have been waiting all along, their alter ego and inner demon in human form. Here are the secret Republican movements under Trump which very few are looking into.

Donald Trump and his Camp of the Saints enthusiasts led by Steve Bannon have long wanted to prevent the entry of non-white people into the US. Republicans share the same view. Senator Jeff Sessions is comfortably the most racist senator around. With Trump’s election, the long awaited Republican wants of protecting their borders is going to be achieved. What more, the establishment Republicans will pretend like it wasn’t them who did it.

Conservative legal transformation

While the country is looking at the election of Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court, Trump has taken the opportunity to fill thousands of legal positions with very young hardline conservatives. Some of these people are going to remain in their position for the next 50+ years. They are going to enact their policies for years to come. The popular misconception is that conservatives don’t look at the long term impact of their policies. That holds good only for values like equality, distribution of wealth. When it comes to ensuring their personal wealth is maintained and the spread conservative values, they look way beyond the traditional left. This particular move will leave the US longing for any progressive legal reformation for decades.

Suppressing voting rights

The very first point Trump made after getting elected was illegal votes registered. The Koch brothers have for some time now initiated multiple movements which will make voter registration extremely difficult. This has forever been a Republican strategy, which started with black people and women getting voting rights. These movements are always camouflaged with legal sounding initiatives like voter Identification system, prevention of illegal voting etc. The implementation is always heavily biased against non-whites or in some cases even white females.

Civil rights

Abraham Lincoln, strangely a Republican abolished slavery and started the civil liberties movement in the US. That also paved way for the modern day Republican Party which doesn’t stand for any of Lincoln’s values. Equal civil rights to minorities are called out as reverse discrimination by many Republicans in the US. I truly believe they do not actually believe in that but have identified that as a great propaganda tool to use against minorities. Trump is the poster child of that propaganda machine. He is always keen on reducing any provision which will prevent minorities from being discriminated under the pretext of terrorism, crime or religious freedom. He will frame it in a way that opponents will be flabbergasted at the deceit.  The left will be left with nowhere to go as Trump goes on his unabashed maniac rant to his base.

Pro Corporations

Wall Street as with any other Financial services hub in the world is bereft any social, moral or economic values. Their aim is to drive the profits of corporations for the next quarter. They expect socialism for themselves and capitalism for the rich. This is the same setup which expected to be bailed out at the expense of tax payers. They converted their greedy private debt to public debt. For years without any understanding of cause and effect, the free market activists have been fighting for deregulation, claiming it is a cure for all malice. Trump is at the centre of this propaganda. He not only wants deregulation but also wants to make future regulation extremely hard. He wants to reduce corporate taxes to an all time low. Trump will do it at a scale which will make Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher proud.

Reducing liberties

The America Bill of Rights has 10 amendments. The first one guarantees people freedom of religion, speech, to protest and freedom of the press. Trump and his Republican friends are against all those when it opposes their view. While it is true that both the mainstream left and right have lost tolerance, the key progressive activists are still for free speech. For the right free speech is reserved for them, freedom of religion is reserved only to Christianity, freedom to protest is limited to their T-Party movement and freedom of the press is limited to right-wing conspiracy channels and Fox News. This is Trump in entirety.

Education

If you look at most of the GOP policies, they target two aspects of young people’s life. One is health care and the other one is education. There are two main reasons why funding for public education is always questioned. Unlike their popular claims, they do not want to remove government intervention in education, they actually want to divert funds to religious schools and rich private schools. By defunding public education sector under the pretext of balance, they generate continuous generations of people they can keep under check by their economic stranglehold. Trump as Betsy DeVos to do this for him. There can’t be a better-suited individual to strangle the education system in the US from reaching the poor.

Health care

I have to put most of the Democrats and all the Republicans in one basket as far as health care is concerned. As I write this the Senate has rolled back the Affordable Care Act and replaced it with an unknown policy. The health care policy is a mix of complete privatisation of the health care combined with regulations coming from Christian Fundamental rules. This means private health care would not be able to provide vaccination against some diseases or perform abortion or birth control. Trump lives and breathes these rules. He has never been to a public hospital in his life and probably thinks quite poorly about it. He is against abortion or any form of birth control. What is worse, he will say that in public in a way that will make it sound absolutely moral.

Pro Rich

The Republicans have been pro-rich for years. They have somehow connected the overall social development with the rich accumulating wealth which never trickles down. I can’t believe that a society which doesn’t want to pay taxes as that will reduce their wealth will be willing to pay living wages to their employees the fundamental point behind the trickle down Reaganomics. Trickle down economics is not economics but a political propaganda. Trump drives that propaganda with aplomb. No one since Reagan has been able to drive this message to the working class like Trump. It is a foolish message only if you understand the principles of economics.

Anti scientific

Scientific principles are built around evidence and consistency. It is hard for a scientist to convey a message without using facts. Also, it sticks to the boundaries of logic as a human brain can process. These have posed problems to the conservatives. From their economic theories to the understanding of the climate science, the conservatives have used myths and conspiracies to derail people from fact checking their views. The Republicans have largely been successful with this strategy. They have got enough conservative conspiracy theorists who help them. It is not possible to be a leftist conspiracy theorist. It is an oxymoron. Trump simply excels at this. He has a great ability to mix conspiracies with nationalistic populism at a rapid rate which makes fact checking impossible. He uses the same technique to negate any scientific views, especially on climate change.

Pro arms

Nothing excites Republicans than seeing the bodies of dead soldiers. The second amendment is their favourite part of the American Constitution. There are two main reasons why the like arms race. One, it satisfies the imperialistic desire to conquer sovereign nations. The second and the most important one is that the politicians are heavily funded by arms manufacturers like Lockheed Martin and BAE systems. The congressmen work for their donors. Trump epitomises the deep rooted fears in people which drive them to an arms race. He sells both fear and hope with such an efficiency that the Republicans cannot find an equivalent person to do it in their Party.

Trump is a bombastic, shameless, egocentric showman who can sell the Republican ideas like no one else can. He is aggressive, unfiltered and above all has the knack of connecting with his audience. He can create an alternate reality and make everyone believe in it. So, the popular belief that Trump will destroy the conservative values is not true. Trump truly represents those values and has just removed the facade. The naked Republicanism is just hard to watch and impossible to digest. The thing about the US politics is that most of the Democrats also fall under the same category. They are at best centrist Republicans rather than true progressives and Trump is truly their manifestation.

Making Russia relevant again

Vladimir Putin couldn’t have asked for better advertisement of his might than the one happening in the US now. For the first time since the beginning of the end of the USSR in the early 1980s, has Russia felt so much superior. So, what is this drama all about? Why are parties so eager to talk about Russia? Why make Russia so relevant again? What has driven this frenzy of fear mongering? I will break this down to the best of my understanding.

To understand this, we have to start with the collapse of the USSR. Michael Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin were all part of the communist party before the breakdown of the USSR. It is a very well known fact that Michael Gorbachev rushed into the process under the behest of the American government under both Ronald Reagan and George.H.W.Bush. It was a victory of years of American propaganda against communism. However, for people of Russia it was a partition poorly executed move. The NATO political engine run the US government was at the helm of affairs driving this collapse. This was the first major discontent for Russians after the fall of the communist regime.

It followed by the election of Boris Yeltsin, a very well known American puppet. Both the Republican Party under George Bush Sr. and the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton, were instrumental in getting Boris Yeltsin elected two times. Talking of collusion, that was a true act of collusion by the American Government. There are enough pieces of evidence in the public domain on this. This was the second major setback in the relationship between the two countries strictly caused by the actions of the US government.

Out of this chaos comes Vladimir Putin, the man who would have been a perfect accomplice for Joseph Stalin. He did what the US has been doing against Russia for decades. He started a propaganda machine against the influence of the US government in Russia. He started ruling by wielding his power and spreading fear. Considering how the economy of Russia has been dismantled and what the US has done to them and other countries across the globe, he didn’t have far to go. He has been waiting like a hawk for the opportunity to establish his might.

So, what is Donald Trump’s connection to Russia. Donald Trump has been a rich, spoilt man-child since very early days. Some of his interviews from 80s onwards are available in YouTube for people to view and judge. He has been meddling with the legal system for his personal gains all along. For all his talk of surrounding himself with not so smart people, he has always ensured he has the services of some astute business thinkers to guide his business. Trump success with this approach has been quite phenomenal. A similar act of his was to get money from Russia to invest in his properties globally and also reciprocating the same in Russia. It was a case of aiding money laundering. All of a sudden for people in Putin’s government, here is an opportunity to invest in places where they otherwise can’t. This has already been confirmed by the idiot sons of Trump from their interviews in 2007-2008. These are secret transactions that generally don’t get revealed. However, for Donald Trump and his sons, who take pride in doing shady activities which test legal and moral boundaries, this was an achievement worth the pride.

Moving on to the US elections of 2016, did Russia actually meddle with the election? The answer is possible but there is no evidence of their influence actually changing the result. Donald Trump’s willingness to not antagonise Russia was the only sane part of his otherwise despicable and insane campaign. There is definitely enough evidence to suggest Russsian government under Putin, wanted to get Trump elected but that doesn’t mean they hacked the voting machines and changed votes. The election of Trump was a result of factors I have already explained in another blog.

So, why is Trump worried? The US government has spends decades in spreading fear and hatred towards Russia. Even a neutral view is perceived unacceptable for most of the mainstream politicians. The ongoing investigation might reveal Donald Trump’s business ties with Russia and the favours they traded. This could turn out to be counter productive to Donald Trump’s political future. For Russia, having Trump at the helm means reduced sanctions, global acceptance, political favours and investments. Trump will do it to prevent Russia from revealing his business ties with them.

Should rest of the world or even the US Citizens be worried? My thought on this is opposite to the mainstream media. I feel this could be the only positive aspect of Trump’s presidency. He will not go into a war against the will of Russians. He will stop NATO forces from threatening Russia. It will prevent another Cold War and a resultant arms race. This is better for the world and the US. For Russia however, it is a mixed bag. On the positive side, this will get investments into the country which has currently dried significantly. It will open up markets for their exports. The down side to this is Vladimir Putin is going to be more powerful than today. That might not the best situation for people fighting for liberation, true democracy,  freedom of speech and human rights in Russia.

What should the Democratic Party do? The US Democratic Party has been talking about Russia and collusion more like the Cold War  times. They haven’t done anything to help the people of the US. While their actions might help them with keeping Trump distracted and getting into his nerves, it won’t help them win elections. It is a strategy that can easily backfire. They need to show evidences to the people by enacting people friendly policies, holding Trump accountable and building grassroot progressive movements. Banking on Trump’s failure for their success is what Hilary did and it caused her downfall. They will repeat the same mistake at their own peril.

My tribute to Liu Xiaobo

The great Liu Xiaobo is no more. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate who took on the mighty totalitarian political regime in China succumbed to medical complications at the age of 61. For people with a rebellious streak, Liu represented the fight for liberty, freedom and extreme courage. For me, he was the peaceful version of Che Guevera. I am using the verses of the famous tamil rebel poet Subramaniya Bharathi as a tribute for Liu.

தேடிச் சோறுநிதந் தின்று – பல
சின்னஞ் சிறுகதைகள் பேசி – மனம்
வாடித் துன்பமிக உழன்று – பிறர்

There are enough articles on the life of Liu, but I want to remember some of his quotes.

“Free expression is the base of human rights, the root of human nature and the mother of truth. To kill free speech is to insult human rights, to stifle human nature and to suppress truth.”

“My tendency to idealize Western civilization arises from my nationalistic desire to use the West in order to reform China. But this has led me to overlook the flaws of Western culture.”

“I hope that I will be the last victim in China’s long record of treating words as crimes.”

His inabsentia statement for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I look forward to (the day) when my country is a land with freedom of expression, where the speech of every citizen will be treated equally well; where different values, ideas, beliefs, and political views … can both compete with each other and peacefully coexist; where both majority and minority views will be equally guaranteed, and where the political views that differ from those currently in power, in particular, will be fully respected and protected; where all political views will spread out under the sun for people to choose from, where every citizen can state political views without fear, and where no one can under any circumstances suffer political persecution for voicing divergent political views. I hope that I will be the last victim of China’s endless literary inquisitions and that from now on no one will be incriminated because of speech.”

Liu will definitely be remembered for his courage. He could have escaped to Australia after the Chinese Communist Party started cracking down the protesters at Tiananmen Square. Even as his friend drove him down the embassy, he decided to stay back and fight. History shows that great fighters don’t live long enough to see the fruits of their sacrifices. Their death galvanises people to continue the struggle and I really hope the same happens for people of China to unite and fight for liberty.

Marriage is not sacred II – The Indian Wedding

As a child growing up in India, I loved attending wedding ceremonies of my family friends and relatives. It had everything that a child loved, new clothes, amazing food and a venue to play. As years passed by I started getting uncomfortable with the prospect of attending weddings. It required me to have uncomfortable conversations with people who didn’t respect my private space. Finally, as I understood what an Indian wedding involves, I believe it is a religious propaganda event with lots of financial ramifications.

India is a land of multiple religions and each religion has various sects. However, it doesn’t change the underlying culture of all these people. The deep-rooted cultural, racial, gender and class biases still remain. So what is applicable to one is truly applicable to the other. Further, secular weddings or court weddings as they are referred in India are genuinely rare. Here are the observations of the draconian impacts of these weddings.

Tradition

The traditions behind marriages are deeply disturbing. The tradition of weddings is equally callous. All of a sudden everyone around you starts to pick up a position in your life. The society feels the right to feel privileged. The traditions range from identifying dates which suit everyone, inviting hundreds of people in person, purchasing gifts for everyone, preparing for a 3-day event and above all dealing with sissy fits of people I generally refer to as “irrelevants” in the marital life. Then comes the traditions associated with religion, satisfying the priests who perform the wedding and invoking god in almost all aspects of it.

Social Pressure

There is a very high degree of social pressure in ensuring that your son gets married by the time he turns 28 or your daughter gets married by the time she turns 25. Sadly, the words used by even parents in this context is ‘saleable age’. It is very common to hear parents say, “everyone is asking me why I am not getting you married”, “you will not get options if you cross this age”,”no one will want you, you will be too old”. The social pressure turns parents into beings you truly despise.

The wedding is where the social pressure literally peaks. The event thrives on inducing jealousy, vitriol and fear. The common themes are

  1. I want to do all this for everyone to see  – Inducing jealousy in others
  2. I want to do this as someone else did it – I have been made to feel jealous
  3. I have to do this as people around me expect to do – I fear the result if I don’t meet everyone’s expectation
  4. I have to do this otherwise everyone will speak badly about the wedding – I have experienced or seen people experience this vitriol

So, invariably people who are conducting the wedding are forced to meet all these unrealistic social expectations.

It’s all about procreation

One cannot get through a wedding without people advising the bride and the groom about procreating. Most Hindu weddings are a segment where prayers are said for effective procreation. In crude terms, it is about praying to god to give you sexual powers. In Muslim and Christian weddings, the priest or imam gives advice on the sins of contraception. It never ends. In a year or two, if you don’t have a child, the entire society pitches in. They psychologically burn you down with feelings of remorse and regret. It starts off by making you feel inadequate and moves to shaming.  I always maintain god and society are two entities which always wants a share in your bedroom.

Here are the common points you will hear from the most disingenuine people around you.

  1. “Do you have any good news?” – like any news other than having a baby is not a good one.
  2. “You have to ensure your blood line continues” – they never say why.
  3. “Someone has to take care of you when you get old” – this is the most selfish and possibly immoral reason to have a child
  4. “Life is all about sacrifice” – This comes from people who would not have sacrificed a breath.
  5. “Did you check with a doctor?” – these are people you should think of never talking again.
  6. “I know a good astrologer” – these are people too dumb to give you advice.
  7. “I want you to have a child, it will complete you” – These are narcissists. Their happiness depends on your behaviour,  so they essentially want control over you.

Dowry

The dowry is the most despicable part of the Indian wedding.  Dowry refers to the transfer of wealth from on side to the other, predominantly from the bride’s side to the groom’s side. There are multiple theories on the origins of this ugly practice. The neo-spiritual leaders want to project like this is a malice developed by the Britishers to rule India.  While it is definitely true that Britishers exploited the inherent differences, it is a very inaccurate statement to make. I definitely want to write about the impact of the British colonial rule in India but attributing dowry to them is extremely evasive and unreal. The transfer of wealth and inheritance to the groom is a very ancient practice in Hindu culture going with references and justification in Manu Smriti – the code of Hindu ethics.

There are three types of this which are happening in the modern world.

  1. Groom’s family demanding dowry
  2. Bride’s family thrusting it
  3. Transfer of wealth happens with neither party thinking about it in great detail

The first and the most common one is where the groom’s side of the family lay out a set of demands. I have personally witnessed this cringe-worthy, outrageous and inhumane act. It always starts with the senior most member of the family and in most occasions a deeply religious crack head initiating these proceedings. Any humanist watching this will feel a deep sense of discomfort and anger. You can compare this situation to a hostile boardroom negotiation for a takeover, just that this involves trading humans. The worst part of all is when both sides end up thanking the initiator for mediating the proceedings.

The second one is increasingly becoming common among middle-class people in cities. The families have developed this need to showcase their love by forcefully handing over wealth. Since it is done under the name of love, it is a difficult point to refute. However, if one digs a level deep this point collapses like a house of cards. This is not done for love towards their daughters but love for themselves, the needs to be seen as loving parents. If you look at it, what is the love if giving something to your daughter which she doesn’t need or in most situations will never need.

The third one is a wealthy class behaviour but is increasingly being seen in upper middle-class families. They don’t even realise or question it. The bride’s family gives, both the bride and the groom don’t feel uncomfortable with it. It has become innate.

If we investigate the propagation of any social malice, we can see a pattern here. The three points give us the idea of how this evil has evolved to a state where it has become part of the system.  If polio doesn’t get eradicated and everyone is affected by it, no individual will ever know the concept of walking properly. That is the state to which dowry is going in India.

Religious laws

While most cultures in the world have made it a norm for the girl to lose her identity after marriage, the Indian culture takes it to a new level. The primitive minds of the scum who came up with the religious rules were very careful in embedding deeply disturbing concepts after giving girls a semblance of liberty.  Some of the horrific concepts you will hear quite commonly are below.

  • Kanya Dhan: This practice is not just immoral and disturbing but is to me the fabric which binds this entire society of credulity and servility. It means charitable donation of an unmarried (I think it can be substituted for virgin) daughter. It is an act of registering a transfer of deed.
  • Husband is equivalent to god: The phrase ‘pati parameshwar’ is very often heard not just in real life but also in movies. It is often given a good connotation signifying the importance of treating husband as god. While I do agree that both god and husband need not be treated with reverence, that is not the context where this phrase is used.  The girl is expected to submit to will of the husband. This comes up irrespective of the religious background. It requires the girl to surrender her critical faculties and get treated like a slave.
  • Pativrata: The girl is always respected being loyal to her husband and accepting him irrespective of his behavior. The concept of  chastity and loyalty is reserved only to the girl, while her husband is not measured on that. It is quite understandable considering a sizable majority of the country worships the mythological figures Rama and Sita. Rama even going by the books was a cruel and irresponsible husband, while Sita is a submissive, loyal wife. She doesn’t stand up for herself till the last line of the last book, post which the epic ends.

In summary, the well documented and rather celebrated Indian weddings are nothing more than shows for the rest of the society. This pompous exhibition much like what happens in Vatican, covers up the underlying filth, lies and deceits. As a person who has experienced it, I strongly feel it should be ripped off and replaced with simple acts which acknowledges mutual love and respect. As I went through his horror personally, that is what I kept telling myself. I am happily in a relationship with my wife but that happiness stems from our love for each other and the fact that we have overlooked the meaning of the event completely.

When my daughter helped me identify my bias

Recently, I started telling stories of real-life achievers as bedtime stories to my daughter Riya. I felt really nice doing that. I despise the fairy tales and myths. So, by telling these stories,  I felt I am doing something right for my daughter. So far, I have told her stories of evolution by Darwin, Neil Amstrong on the moon, Sir. Edmond Hillary and Tensing Norgay climbing Mt. Everest etc. I felt happy as I am not biasing my young daughter’s mind with stupid stories. However, something interesting happened yesterday which changed my perception.

When I was putting Riya to sleep yesterday night, I told her the story of astronaut Sunita Williams. She was happy listening to the story and was keen on learning more. I accidentally realised this was the first story with a woman protagonist that I have told my daughter.  I told my wife about the same when Riya turned around and asked me, “Yes, you always tell me only stories of boys. Why don’t you tell me girl stories pa?”. It is quite possible that she too realised when I told my wife but it was interesting that she noted it. The incident made me realise my unconscious bias. The first 5 achievers I named were all male.

I wanted to write about this incident immediately. As a parent, it is extremely important for us to make a conscious attempt to provide a balanced perspective. Kids learn from what we say.  I wonder if Riya would have thought achievements of the highest order are restricted to men or her father only recognises achievements of men. Either of that is not what I had in mind or wanted to instil in her. It is time for me to change. I have started doing research of loads of women achievers across different fields. This was another realisation that I had thanks to my daughter.
